Ticket open art museum, St.Gallen

Description

With versammelt and _collage - collectio_n, two exhibitions are dedicated to the fascinating phenomenon of collecting. Is there a homo collector alongside the homo faber? Why do people collect? What do we collect? What stories are hidden in the individual objects, what stories are behind the collections? How is collecting organised by artists and what does it mean for the artistic process? Be it scraps of paper that are turned into collages, everyday objects or artefacts as well as waste materials that form assemblages and comprehensive installations and even shape urban space: The use of found objects is diverse. They are incorporated, painted over, alienated, recombined and reassembled. What they have in common is their appreciation of the material, their respect for things, their perception of the "non-entity" as an animated object, their view of things as a work and their subversive reinterpretation as a work of art.

Carte Blanche

What does collecting mean for people? Does it change our lives or our view of the world? We talk to people who have dedicated themselves to different areas of collecting. They collect cars (Fredy Lienhard), pinball sets (Sam Lutz), porcelain deer (Carmela Lüchinger), calabashes (Ahmad Al Rayyan) or self-painted Warhammer miniatures (Thomas List-Battaglia), historical maps (Michael Koch) and mouth organs from different cultures (Urs Jordi). In the cabinet they present alternately parts of their collections. We visit Fredy Lienhard on site in the Autobau Erlebniswelt, Sam Lutz in the Billiard Pub.
